Septabeat

Drum & Bass Drummer and Producer

[um_bookmarks_button]

Septabeat, also known as Sam Gardner, is a multi-instrumentalist and producer with a rich musical background. Fascinated by the number 7 in music and inspired by Indian classical music, Septabeat’s name originates from a synth called the Septabox.

Sam’s Education and Musical Influences

Sam attended Leeds College of Music, where he was introduced to drum and bass (D&B) at a rave featuring Dillinja. He immediately fell in love with the genre, setting the course for his musical journey. For Sam, D&B elicits raw, visceral feelings and emotions that he cannot find in other genres.

Joining Submotion Orchestra and Musical Experimentation

From 2015 Sam joined Submotion Orchestra for a number of shows, a group known for combining various styles, he began experimenting with electronics and acoustic drums, ultimately leading him to produce his own music using Ableton Live.

Collaboration with Sofi Mari and the Sundance EP

Septabeat has released the energetic and precise Sundance EP through Fokuz Recordings, thanks to Sofi Mari, a vocalist who also collaborated with Sam on the EP. Sofi and Sam’s writing process was seamless, with Sam working on the piano and Sofi singing. They would draft lyrics and melodies together, after which Sofi would record her vocal arrangements.

New Dawn EP and Collaboration with Syren Rivers

The New Dawn EP, also on Fokuz Recordings, includes a collaboration with Syren Rivers. Both artists seem to have a deep understanding of each other’s music, with Syren effortlessly navigating the jazz chord changes that Sam incorporates.

Influence of Live Performances on Sam’s Studio Work

Sam’s live performance background has significantly influenced his studio work. His studio setup features electronic and acoustic drums, allowing him to play ideas into the computer, chop them up, and trigger various virtual instruments.

New Directions and Future Projects

Although the current state of live performances has been challenging for Sam, he has focused on new directions as a producer, moving into music for film, TV, and ads. He is also working on two more EPs to be released on Fokuz this year and plans to release a solo album afterward.
